SPIDER-MAN (2002) Recalled Advance Original With Date

A genuine original issued rolled Advance 27x40 (exact measurements 26 ¾” x 39 ¾”) with “3 MAY 2002” displayed centered near bottom of poster; SPIDER-MAN (2002), original vintage unrestored movie poster.

This poster features original artwork created for the films first-run to the theatres from its U.S. release on May 3, 2002. This is the famous recalled version with a reflection of the Twin Towers in Spidey’s eyes. After the terrorist attacks on the U.S. on September 11, 2001, Sony recalled teaser posters, which showed a close-up of Spider-Man’s face with the New York skyline (including, prominently, the World Trade Center towers) reflected in the eyes. There are a few different versions of this one sheet. Some display “May 2002,” while others display “Coming May 2002.” This version displays “3 MAY 2002” centered near bottom of poster. This is guaranteed to be an original movie poster issued by the studio and meant for theatrical display.

There are three versions of the recalled Spider-Man Advance one sheet, which are described as follows: The first version displays “3 MAY 2002” centered near bottom of poster; distributed by the studio in North America. Printed single-sided and double-sided issued with glossy UV coating on front. Measuring 26 3/4” x 39 3/4”. The second version displays “COMING 2002” centered near bottom of poster; distributed by the studio for International release. Printed double-sided issued with glossy UV coating on front. Measuring 26 3/4” or 26 15/16” x 39 11/16” or 39 5/8”. The third (and final) version displays “2002” centered near bottom of poster; distributed by the studio in South America. Printed double-sided issued with glossy UV coating on front. Measuring 26 3/4” x 39 3/4”.

Spider-Man is a 2002 American superhero film directed by Sam Raimi. Based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. After being stuck in development for nearly 25 years, the film was licensed for a worldwide release by Sony Pictures Entertainment in 1999 after it acquired options from MGM on all previous scripts developed by Cannon Films, Carolco, and New Cannon. Exercising its option on just two elements from this multi-script acquisition (a screenplay credited to James Cameron, Ted Newsom, John Brancato, Barney Cohen, and “Joseph Goldman” – the pen name of Menahem Golan – and a later treatment credited solely to Cameron), Sony hired David Koepp to create a working screenplay from this “Cameron material.” Directors Roland Emmerich, Tim Burton, Chris Columbus, and David Fincher were considered to direct before Raimi was hired as director in 2000. The Koepp script was rewritten by Scott Rosenberg during preproduction and received a dialogue polish from Alvin Sargent during production. Columbia (the films distributor) offered David Koepp’s name to the Writers Guild as sole screenwriter, despite the fact that it had acquired Cameron’s script and hired two subsequent writers. Without reading and comparing any of the materials, the WGA approved sole credit to Koepp.

Spider-Man was a major commercial success, becoming the fastest theatrical release to reach $100 million mark in a single weekend. It had the highest-opening week in North America box office film for a non-sequel. And, the film had the highest-opening day at the time until surpassed by its sequel, Spider-Man 2, in 2004. The film received wide critical acclaim, being highlighted by several aspects that were fairly faithful to the comics, such as cast choice, visual style and plot. USA Today critic Mike Clark believed the casting rivaled that of Christopher Reeve as 1978’s Superman. The film was nominated at the 75th Academy Awards ceremony for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Mixing.

It measures 27x40 inches (exact measurements 26 ¾” x 39 ¾”) and printed double-sided with glossy UV coating on front, issued rolled. This vintage unrestored poster is in mint plus – Never Used condition. A hard to find original in this condition. A very rare and desirable print.
