Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, later released as Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, is a 1980 American epic space opera film. It is the second film to be released in the Star Wars series and the fifth in terms of internal chronology of the storyline. Like its predecessor, Empire draws from several mythological stories and world religions. It also includes elements of 1930s film serials such as Flash Gordon, a childhood favorite of Lucas’, that similarly featured a city afloat in the sky (i.e., Cloud City). George Lucas’ 1977 Star Wars exceeded all expectations in terms of profit, its revolutionary effect on the film industry, and its unexpected resonance as a cultural phenomenon. Lucas hoped to become independent from the Hollywood film industry by financing Empire himself with $33 million from loans and the previous film’s earnings, going against the principles of many Hollywood producers never to invest one’s own money. Now fully in command of his Star Wars enterprise, Lucas offered the role to director to Irvin Kershner, one of his former professors at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Lawrence Kasdan, who Lucas was impressed from his script draft for Raiders of the Lost Ark was hired as writer after Leigh Brackett died of cancer after finishing her first draft of Empire in February 1978. After the various increases in budget, Empire became one of the most expensive films of its day and after the bank threatened to pull his loan, Lucas was forced to approach Alan Ladd Jr., then president of 20th Century Fox. Lucas and Ladd made a deal to secure the loan in exchange for paying the studio more money but without the loss of his sequel and merchandising rights. A deal the studio later squawked about, which pressured Ladd to quit. The departure of his longtime ally caused Lucas to take Raiders to Paramount Pictures. The Empire Strikes Back became the highest-grossing film of 1980. The film received mixed reviews from critics upon its initial release. However, fans and critics alike have widely come to consider Empire to be the franchise’s best film and one of the greatest films ever made.
